"Geographical Indicators: Crackdown on Common Food Names"

Geographical indications (GIs) are used to describe specialized products made in a specific region in a specific manner in order to protect the unique nature of that product. Parmigiano-Reggiano is an example of a GI while the name parmesan is a common term used to describe cheeses produced all around the world. However, the European Union wants to monopolize a wide variety of common terms under the guise of GI protections and related policies, closing markets to these products and putting exporting and manufacturers jobs at risk. These EU-driven policies are already impacting the dairy, meat, wine, beer and rice sectors – and may threaten the sale of products in additional industries in the years to come as trade restrictions around the world continue to expand. Join Shawna Morris, Senior Director at the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN), for a webinar at 1:00 EST on January 27th on this critical topic, how it may affect your business and how CCFN is working to defend your right to use common terms.
