Course Description

The presenters will discuss the physical therapy practice problem and evidence-based practice on issues surrounding systemic racism, cultural competence, and unconscious bias. For healthcare providers to promote consistency and equity in the delivery of healthcare, the concept of bias among healthcare providers will be explored. An in-depth discussion on how unconscious bias impacts our decision-making as healthcare providers and increases our awareness of strategies to manage our bias to improve the quality of healthcare. The student experience will be discussed to understand the current traditional DPT curriculum expectations and the importance of providing adequate cultural competence before entering their clinical internships and future clinicians. This presentation will explore various self-assessment and organizational tools along with providing strategies for organizational change and sustainability in bridging the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) gap. Further discussion on how effective DEI change can be implemented and achieved on a personal, professional, academic, and organizational level. In addition, the importance of involvement in public health policy will be highlighted to bring systemic and societal change.
