Gun violence prevention requires a comprehensive public health approach to address the complexity of this growing crisis. In addition to discussing firearm violence broadly, this webinar will explore the impact of non-fatal firearm injuries, current data needs, community engagement prevention strategies and uplift challenges to achieving health equity. Presenters will provide their perspective and then engage in a brief moderated conversation before taking questions from the audience.

Mighty Fine
Mighty Fine, a Social Epidemiologist by training, is currently the Director of the Center for Public Health Practice and Professional Development at the American Public Health Association. In that role, Mr. Fine designs, develops, and evaluates public health programs; and provides technical assistance and consultation to key stakeholders on an array of public health issues. Although his work stems across various aspects of public health, he employs a special focus on injury and violence prevention, maternal and family health and chronic disease prevention. Overall, within his duties he incorporates epidemiological concepts to frame APHA’s public health practice initiatives and works to ensure synergies exist between public health practice and policy.

Catherine Barber, MPA
Catherine Barber, is a senior researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health’s Injury Research Center where she led the effort to design and test the pilot for the CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System. Her expertise is in designing and evaluating injury surveillance systems and using their data for prevention. She is the founding director of Means Matter, a project to disseminate research and interventions aimed at reducing a suicidal person’s access to highly lethal suicide methods. Barber was the lead author with Elaine Frank on the original CALM-Online (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means), produced with SPRC, and she was one of the originators of the Gun Shop Project, a novel approach to bringing firearm retailers, instructors, and other firearm stakeholders into the suicide prevention field. She is the recipient of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Allies in Action Lifetime Achievement Award.
