A conversation and Q&A about cultural humility: what it is, and why it’s vital for public health leaders to incorporate it into their work.
Lawrence Haynes is the Program Manager for Racial Equity for the Center for Public Health Policy at the American Public Health Association where he focuses on managing and supporting the Healing Through Policy initiative. Mr. Haynes is also a PhD student at Howard University studying Higher Education Leadership & Policy
Dr.
Kelly Taylor is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of
Prevention Science and Director of Domestic Programs in the Center for Pandemic
Preparedness and Response in theInstitute for Global Health Sciences at University of
California San Francisco. Her primary research interests are in health equity in low
resource settings, health disparities, and psychosocial determinants of health
in developing countries, particularly, the role of community engagement in
health care as well the use of bio-behavioral surveillance to better allocate
resources for prevention and treatment of HIV among minoritized communities.
Dr. Taylor’s emphasis is domestic and global having worked professionally in
the United States, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, and South
Africa.
She is
Director of Community Engagement in the UCSF Pandemic Initiative for Equity and
Action, whose mission is to build transformative public health solutions that
empower community partners, advance equity, and save lives. It is through that
initiative that she leads training on cultural humility and co-leads CULTIVATE,
Combating Unequal Treatment in Healthcare Through Virtual Awareness and
Training in Empathy, which is an initiative that is currently looking at
decreasing bias in health care experienced by Black as well as Indigenous and
People of Color domestically. She
received her Masters of Social Work at University of Michigan, PhD in Community
Psychology at Vanderbilt University, and MPH in Epidemiology at University
California Berkeley.
