The prevalence and burden of untreated oral diseases throughout the life course remain high worldwide, and inequalities in oral health and dental care are increasing. This is a major public health issue that is not being enough addressed by the health care systems. Indeed, it is recognized worldwide that there are gaps, in terms of availability, accessibility, acceptability, or performance between the currently available oral health services and the actual and future oral health needs of the populations. The education of oral health professionals represents a key determinant for better matching between health services and population needs. In Europe, great variability exists between dental programs within the same country or between countries. The convergence of competencies and quality standards at the international level must thus be better clearly identified, defined, and improved.
This is the purpose of the O-Health-Edu project, “Advancing Oral Health: A vision for Dental Education” that is being supported by the E.U. within the KA2 – “Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices” and KA203 – “Strategic Partnerships for higher education” Erasmus + program. It is coordinated by the University of Clermont Auvergne (France) with the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and eight other European university partners. The project is driven by three overarching objectives that are to provide a diagnosis of the current situation of dental education in Europe, to enable a shared understanding and a common vision for the future of Oral Health Professionals' Education (OHPs) and to define priorities for a strategic vision for supporting changes for oral health professionals’ education in 2030. The three strategic objectives will be attained by the delivery of 13 intellectual outputs. These are tangibles that can demonstrate the delivery of a particular activity or consensus. While each intellectual output is a designated completion stage in its own right, it is important to note that each is inextricably linked and reliant upon others to ensure delivery.
This symposium will focus on four intellectual outputs that are: - a scoping review on the available information about the situation of OHPs education in Europe (University of Sheffield, O-Health-Edu consortium), a synopsis concerning the current state, and a vision for the future of OHPs Education in Europe (University of Cardiff, O-Health-Edu consortium), Articulate: A Glossary of OHPs Higher Education in Europe (University Of Malmo, O-Health-Edu consortium), a questionnaire survey that helped build an opened data source with regular updates about OHPs education in Europe (University of Barcelona, O-Health-Edu consortium).
