Recording - Quarter of a Century of Proteomics: Towards Precision Oral Health

Presentation Icon
The term proteomics was coined in 1994 and refers to the analysis and identification of complex mixtures of proteins. Over the last 26 years the field has accelerated forward with the rapid changes in mass spectrometry instrumentation and innovations in quantitative chemistries and informatics advances. A quarter of a century on from its naming proteomics has developed in to a well-established field of research often used in dentistry, in particular for periodontal diseases, for the identification of biomarkers. Novel approaches are now tackling the field of complex protein mixtures derived from more than one species: metaproteomics; and exploring breakdown of protein mixtures: degradomics. These specialized fields of proteomics and their application to oral biological fluids and dental plaque will be explored in this symposium. The deep learning that can now be made from each sample using proteomics allows for even more knowledge acquisition than ever before. Such in-depth proteomic mapping of oral biofluids may support patient stratification and precision oral health.
