The IADR and AADR Ethics Committees jointly present this symposium that addresses emerging ethical issues in dental research. Transformations in research methods, availability of electronic health data, as well as the use of evidence to inform public health efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic have raised new ethical issues. These increasingly rapid changes impact patients, researchers, clinicians, and publishers in how data are collected, shared, disseminated, and used to inform policy and practice. The widespread use of electronic health records and other databases, along with advances in information technology and informatics, facilitates clinical research and serves as building blocks for pragmatic clinical trials and learning healthcare systems. In this session, Dr. Johnson will discuss ethical issues associated with using these large databases, subsequent data sharing of patient information and patient protection concerns, especially for low literacy and vulnerable populations; Dr. Feine will discuss approaches used by publishers and editors to maintain high ethical standards in scientific publications, following the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines that include transparency and protection of human subjects; and Dr. Campus will discuss ethical issues related in epidemiological and public health considerations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
