Recording - Caries Management with Silver Diamine Fluoride

Presentation Icon
Tooth decay is a global health issue. It is more prevalent and more severe in disadvantaged people. Conventional restorative treatment focusing on repairing the consequences of tooth decay is impractical in many communities. Recently, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is regarded as an effective, viable, and aerosol-free alternative for caries management. SDF has huge potentials within general dental practices and dental public health, particularly in the Covid-19 pandemic. Several clinical trials have demonstrated promising results of SDF in arresting caries in the past two decades. Updated research and knowledge regarding the effectiveness of SDF in managing dental caries is pivotal. In addition, the mechanism of action remains unclear; research about the mechanism SDF in terms of its effect on carious lesions, including its action on cariogenic bacteria and mineral formation, will be presented. The known adverse effect of SDF on staining carious lesions may be a concern, probably affecting patients' acceptability. The safety and adverse issue of SDF and its impact on treated patients' quality of life will be disseminated in this symposium. Besides, feasibility when implementing the SDF program in a community setting will also be discussed.

Therefore, this proposal aims to provide knowledge and share the updated research of SDF intervention strategies and its mechanism of action to address the unmet needs of people with limited access to dental care. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to network and collaborate with expert members and peers through interactive discussions.
