Dr. Howell is the Director of Public Health Dentistry & Teledentistry at A.T. Still University-Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral health (ATSU-ASDOH) and also serves as a clinical advisor for MouthWatch. Over the past six years Dr. Howell has explored the myriad of uses of teledentistry, from asynchronous to direct-to-patient approaches. He has worked to identify challenges that keep teledentistry from being fully utilized and identifying solutions to those challenges. These challenges include a lack of provider and patient readiness to legislative limitations. Dr. Howell has lectured globally on the subject of teledentistry to various audiences and has taught hundreds of dental students at ATSU-ASDOH on how they can utilize teledentistry after they graduate. Recently he has been exploring a greater use of the direct-to-patient modality and how patients and providers can both be prepared to meet one another using video conference technologies.
