Session Description
The foundation for this symposium is that all research must be conducted with strict adherence to the highest ethical standards. The AADOCR and IADR have recently adopted a new Code of Ethics. This symposium and a companion symposium – both organized by the AADOCR Ethics committee and co-sponsored by four Scientific Groups – were crafted to address fundamental principles in the ethical design, implementation, interpretation and application of oral health research. Central to all presentations is the recognition that diversity, equity and inclusion are essential elements of ethical research. Four leading experts will present timely and relevant information on a) general considerations of ethics in oral health research and its application to clinical practice, b) ethical use of big data to address health disparities, c) designing research to address the needs of under-served populations and d) the ethics of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and their impact on research(er), clinician and practice. Speakers will educate attendees about core principles in each topic area, provide essential information and identify key resources that members may apply to their research and clinical care, and share their own experiences to stimulate self-reflection and future dialog.

Learning Objectives
  • Changes in the attitude and approach of the learner:
The symposium is designed to encourage attendees to place ethical considerations as the top priority in their research, teaching/mentoring and clinical care decision-making. The emphasis on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will help attendees to better design their research and to rigorously evaluate the literature to make clinical care decisions.
  • Provision of new knowledge in specific areas:
The topics covered will educate attendees in cutting edge concepts in the ethical design of research and direct them to critical resources to enhance the effectiveness of the research, education/mentoring and clinical care of attendees and their trainees.
