2022 IADR/APR General Session

The 100 th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR was held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region. The virtual meeting was attended by individuals from around the world. Those attending the meeting could choose from among 207 Interactive Talk sessions, seven Focused Learning Sessions, three Hands-on Workshops, five satellite symposia, 52 Symposia, one Distinguished Lecture Series and a plenary.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was to be presented as part of the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include the IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speaker and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

Session Description
The global public health issue of antimicrobial Resistance is a silent pandemic that needs to be tackled immediately. The dental community has an opportunity to contribute to global efforts to tackle antibiotic resistance by promoting appropriate antibiotic use. Antibiotic stewardship and the availability and use of evidence-based prescribing guidelines are key, especially during COVID-19 pandemic when antibiotic prescriptions have substantially increased, as shown in studies of dental prescribing in some countries, including England. Understanding the factors that influence prescribing, and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dental prescribing of antibiotics are important when developing antibiotic stewardship interventions. In addition, knowing what outcomes are best to measure and report in stewardship interventions is also important when developing stewardship programmes, in order to enable comparison between different programmes and locations. The session will explore trends of antibiotics prescribing during the COVID-19 pandemic in different countries. Secondly, an international consensus to measure the core outcomes that should be reported in dental antibiotic stewardship programmes will also be presented. Finally, initial results from a review of the antibiotic prescription guidelines available in the Latin American region, which is needed to understand the current availability of evidence-based guidance and international variations of antibiotics use.

Learning Objectives
  • Learn about the development of international consensus on a Core Outcome Set for Dental Antibiotic Stewardship to maximize the derivable benefit from future studies.
  • Understand the changes in antibiotic prescribing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Investigate the evidence-base and variations among different antibiotic prescribing guidelines for dental care available in the Latin American region.
