2022 IADR/APR General Session

The 100 th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR was held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region. The virtual meeting was attended by individuals from around the world. Those attending the meeting could choose from among 207 Interactive Talk sessions, seven Focused Learning Sessions, three Hands-on Workshops, five satellite symposia, 52 Symposia, one Distinguished Lecture Series and a plenary.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was to be presented as part of the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include the IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speaker and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
Saliva plays an important protective role in the oral cavity, and therefore a decreased saliva secretion rate (hyposalivation) can have serious negative consequences for the oral health. However, it is often difficult to detect a decrease in saliva secretion rate at an early stage, as the feeling of a dry mouth (xerostomia) correlates only to a limited extent with the secretion rate.

The aim of this symposium is to provide dentists with information that will enable them to recognize oral dryness at an early stage. Therefore, the clinical manifestations of hyposalivation will be covered treated and the way in which these symptoms can be combined into the so-called clinical oral dryness score (CODS). Subsequently, the various questionnaires will be discussed that have been developed to quantify the feeling of oral dryness during the last decades. The advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed as well as the degree to which they correlate with clinical manifestations of hyposalivation. Finally, the fact that thickness and composition of the saliva film differs at different locations in the mouth will be discussed, and the possible relation of these intra-oral differences ship with the feeling of oral dryness

Learning Objectives
  • To recognize the intraoral clinical manifestations of hyposalivation
  • To understand the differences between several questionnaires to quantify the feeling of a dry mouth and their pro’s and con’s
  • To learn the variations in the thickness of the saliva film at different intra-oral locations and the potential relation with the feeling of a dry mouth.
