Session Description
Never has mankind been so unprepared and so unsure of what will happen to the planet on which we live. Within dentistry, we contribute around 1% of the overall carbon footprint of the health service.
As sustainability becomes a more time-pressured issue, and global leaders are calling for action; patients and dental professionals around the world are passionate about playing their part in the solution. However, the methodologies used for environmental impact studies can be difficult to interpret, and product marketing terms such as 'eco-friendly' or 'sustainable' remain unregulated. It is no wonder, therefore, that patients and dental professionals alike are at a loss as to what they can do to embed sustainability at the heart of oral health care. The youth of dentistry are asking us to commit to more, to do more, to educate, and to research.
This symposium, delivered by leading sustainability researchers, educators including one of the leading youth in dentistry organisations (European Dental Students Associations) , will de-mystify how environmental impacts are quantified and measured (e.g. carbon modeling and life cycle assessment - remember - it's not just about climate change), and will provide the IADR delegate with an introduction and discussion about current concepts in sustainable healthcare specifically focussing on the core elements of sustainability; Concepts, Education, Policy, and Research.
Concepts: Influencing travel, procurement, PPE, waste, and energy management.
Policy: Developing a sustainable preventive-oriented practice/ Creating a sustainable preventive focussed healthcare system
Education: Influencing changes needed in our education systems to provide the next-generation dental teams with the knowledge and tools to practice sustainable health care.
Research: provide insights and stimulate discussion into the research that needs to be undertaken focusing on both qualitative and quantitative research.

Learning Objectives
  • At the end of the symposium the delegates should be able to: 1) Outline sustainable concepts in dentistry; 2) Interpret the current research within this area; 3) Discuss the numerous ways the IADR community could embrace sustainable research.
  • At the end of the symposium the delegates should be able to: 1) Articulate why local, national and international policy needs to embrace the sustainability agenda; 2) Be aware of the current policy that underpins sustainability; 3) Understand the process and progress of embedding environmental sustainability within existing curricula, including future project work that is required
  • At the end of the symposium the delegates should be able to: 1) Appreciate why prevention itself is the ultimate form of sustainability; 2) Understand the different public health/ population-level prevention approaches and the environmental impacts of each (including water fluoridation, fluoride varnish application in the community, and supervised tooth brushing in schools); 3) Apply the evidence about the environmental impact of common oral health products that dental professionals routinely recommend to patients (e.g. toothbrushes, toothpaste, interproximal cleaning aids) to individual patient care.
