2022 IADR/APR General Session

The 100 th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR was held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region. The virtual meeting was attended by individuals from around the world. Those attending the meeting could choose from among 207 Interactive Talk sessions, seven Focused Learning Sessions, three Hands-on Workshops, five satellite symposia, 52 Symposia, one Distinguished Lecture Series and a plenary.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was to be presented as part of the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include the IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speaker and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
Although non-surgical (steps 1 and 2) periodontal therapy is a necessary and effective treatment for periodontitis, in certain patients or sites this might not be sufficient to resolve inflammation and attain periodontal stability (i.e. no probing pocket depth ≥4 mm with bleeding on probing). This symposium will critically review the current limitations of non-surgical periodontal therapy and the main factors responsible for the variability in outcomes that can be observed in periodontitis patients. Moreover, based on the most recent knowledge on the pathogenesis of periodontitis, considering it an inflammatory disease secondary to dysbiosis, the rationale of using host modulators as adjuncts to step 2 periodontal therapy will be discussed. This represents a paradigm shift in the way we look at periodontitis treatment, since it opens to the idea of combining mechanical removal of bacterial deposits with the use of mediators of inflammation resolution.
In particular, the symposium will focus on the use of probiotics and mediators of inflammation resolution in step 2 periodontal treatment. In this context, indications will be provided to clinicians based on the S3-level treatment guideline recently published by the European Federation of Periodontology. Future perspectives for research will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  • Critically review the current limitations associated with non-surgical (steps 1 and 2) treatment of periodontitis
  • Present the rationale and the current evidence behind the use of host modulators as adjunctive treatments to non-surgical (steps 1 and 2) periodontal therapy (particularly probiotics, omega-3 and mediators of inflammation resolution)
  • Discuss the S3-level EFP treatment guideline on the treatment of periodontitis stage 1, 2 and 3 and future perspectives on the use of host modulators with an eye towards precision medicine.
