The 100 th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR was held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region. The virtual meeting was attended by individuals from around the world. Session Description 
It is generally accepted that Asians including Japanese are more susceptible to obesity-related disorder such as diabetes. In this context, although screening for type 2 diabetes is recommended for the subjects whose BMI over 25 kg/m2 in general population, BMI over 23 kg/m2 is suggested for Asians. Periodontal disease is typical complication of obesity as well as diabetes. Therefore, it is essential to understand the nature of periodontal disease according to the distinct ethnic group with diverse degree of obesity. In this proposal, we first summarize the association between metabolic control of type 2 diabetes and PISA /PESA in Japanese subjects and withdraw the clinical feature of diabetes whose HbA1c was potentially influenced by periodontal inflammation. We next focus on insulin resistance caused by the obesity-related inflammation and unveil the molecular basis as to how insulin resistance affects periodontal pathogenesis. Obesity is characterized by adipocyte maturation. Therefore, it is essential to establish novel therapeutic strategy preventing the maturation of adipocytes. In this context, recently, photoreceptor Opsin 3 was found to be expressed on adipocytes. We discuss about the possible use of Opn3-based phototherapy against obesity (PLoS Biol, 2020). Besides such innovative technology, both diet and exercise are fundamental therapeutic approach against obesity. Here we re-consider the importance of exercise to establish future molecular targeted therapy by identifying molecules influenced by exercise (Cell Metab, 2021).
