Session Description
Bruxism is an oral condition that is gaining increasing interest from several communities of medical and dental practitioners. Over the past decade, an expert panel has worked to provide a consensus definition of bruxism as an umbrella term to indicate different masticatory muscle activities, with or without teeth contact, that may occur during sleep or wakefulness (Lobbezoo et al., J Oral Rehab 2018). More recently, dedicated closed meetings were held during IADR General Sessions from 2018 on to start working on a multidimensional evaluation tool for bruxism. Such instrument, the Standardized Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB), is currently under preparation and aims to provide an overview to evaluate multiple issues concerning bruxism etiology, status, consequences and comorbid conditions (Manfredini et al., J Oral Rehabil 2020). Within these premises, the newest findings in bruxism research and future goals of the expert panel agenda can be shared with the dental community. In this symposium, four renowned experts will guide the attendants through a series of arguments with several multifaceted clinical and research implications, starting from an update on definition and assessment. In short, the first presenter will introduce the current status of the STAB project, the second will present the critical issues concerning bruxism measurement, the third will describe the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the increase in report bruxism, and the fourth will discuss the relationship between bruxism and pain.
