Description
The concept of integration is defined and described in many different ways and dimensions. Integration of various health and development programmes can have significant benefits in terms of disease prevention, overall health improvement and the affordability of healthcare. Oral Diseases, which are one of the most prevalent health affecting conditions globally has often been kept out of the discussions around integrated health and development services and programmes.

Many national governments, globally, have implemented structural and financial reforms to move away from fragmented provider-centred models of care and are striving to orient their health systems based on principles of integration to ensure everybody has access to a continuum of care that is responsive, coordinated and in line with people’s needs throughout their life. Successful integration ensures health care services of acceptable quality, i.e. effective, safe and people-centred. Integrated health services, based on strong primary care and public health functions, directly contribute to a better distribution of health outcomes and enhanced well-being and quality of life, which in turn bring important economic, social and individual benefits. Multi-sectoral integration is the central theme of the Sustainable Development Goals. The recent WHA resolution on oral health also talks about fostering integration of oral health through inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral work.

In order to realize the opportunities offered by the conjunction of these unique circumstances, it is essential to have a clear conception of integrative oral health systems that may guide further progress in mainstreaming oral health.
The proposed symposium will highlight the current opportunities and challenges of integrating oral health care with existing health and development programmes, highlight some of the successful case studies of integration and will aim at outlining a pathway for a fully integrated oral health care services and programmes.
