2022 IADR/APR General Session

The 100 th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR was held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region. The virtual meeting was attended by individuals from around the world. Those attending the meeting could choose from among 207 Interactive Talk sessions, seven Focused Learning Sessions, three Hands-on Workshops, five satellite symposia, 52 Symposia, one Distinguished Lecture Series and a plenary.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was to be presented as part of the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include the IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speaker and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Description
This symposium will highlight cutting edge, game-changing research in the field of behavior management in dentistry. The symposium will share emerging findings from the BeSiDe (Behaviour Support in Dentistry) research project, which focuses on the interface between dentistry and the behavioral sciences. The symposium will share our research approach to address the problems that arise when scientists, educators, and practitioners from different fields fail to communicate using a mutually understood “language”. This can lead to problems like a single behavioral technique having two names and multiple techniques being described by the same term. A lack of standardized language impedes accurate definition, description, and replication of effective behavioral techniques, impeding translation of research to clinical care and perpetuates an artistry that fails to meet the expectations in the era of evidence-based practice. This symposium will mark a landmark in the development and dissemination of a new agreed language of dental behavior support that will inform educators, scientists and clinicians to improve the quality and experience of dental care for those who find this most difficult.

Learning Objectives
  • Discuss the clinical and research dilemmas that arise due to the lack of agreed terminology in dental behavior support across disciplines in dentistry
  • Change, challenge or confirm their fundamental understanding of the aims, scope, theoretical basis and mode of delivery of dental behavior support
  • Understand the scientific process of establishing theory, evidence and consensus-based nomenclature surrounding the use of behavior supports in dentistry, as applied by the BeSiDe research team
