2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Portland, Oregon. The meeting was attended by 2,054 individuals from 39 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the Annual Meeting. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
The practice of dentistry has many aspects and the research topics informing dentistry have even more. There is an expectation that oral, dental, and craniofacial research will help inform clinical practice. However, insight from practice can help inform and prioritize questions to be answered, meaning the relation between the research and practice can be bidirectional. This symposium will illustrate this complexity using examples from diverse research disciplines to show how research influences and is influenced by practice-informed evidence needs. Speakers will present updates on cutting-edge research and priority areas sharing the commonality that they inform clinical practice and/or provide the evidence to improve population health; and will share the aspects of the research derived from practice-based questions. The first presentation will highlight the use of a variety of datasets to answer questions related to compliance with the Minamata Convention as well as how population demographics may affect materials used for caries restoration. The second presentation will summarize the research to address the unmet needs of both patients and clinicians with respect to standards ensuring safety and efficacy of materials used to fabricate clear aligners. The third presentation will illustrate how commonplace assertions about the benefit of dental treatment may be less definitive than assumed due to patient and population-derived disparities. The fourth presentation will explore how cutting-edge scientific understanding can be brought to bear to address patient needs and wants. The symposium will close with a question and answer session facilitated by the presenters.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the amalgam phase-down element in the Minamata Convention and factors affecting the use of dental amalgam in clinical practice.
  • Describe factors complicating the comparison of people who do and don't receive dental care prior to medical intervention.
  • Understand how to identify changes to dental practice can warrant standards development.
Presentation Date
Thursday, March 16, 2023

Presenters
  • Cameron Estrich - Database insight for policy response: Splicing together the picture of amalgam use
  • Spiro John Megremis - Dental practice needs-based standards development: materials for clear aligners
  • Ruth Lipman - Clinical assumptions versus data: Ramifications of dental treatment prior to medical interventions
  • Kevin M. Byrd - Bridging the Gap: Challenges and Opportunities for Next-Generation Precision Oral Medicine
