2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Portland, Oregon. The meeting was attended by 2,054 individuals from 39 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the Annual Meeting. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
The overall objective of the AADOCR Symposium entitled “Oral Microbiome: Beyond Bacteria” is to promote better understanding of oral microbiome from a holistic perspective. Oral microbiome is composed of diverse conventional bacterial species, fungal and viral (bacteriophage) components, as well as recently identified nano-sized parasitic Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR) organisms. It also harbors third branch of the tree of life, archaea, albeit at the much lower level. Effective management of oral microbiome-related diseases calls for a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the oral microbiota on host health and disease, which requires a holistic view of intra- and cross-kingdom interactions among members of the oral microbiome, as well as microbial-host interaction. This symposium will bring together a group of scientists with diverse research backgrounds in oral microbiome (including oral bacteriome, mycobiome, virome, CPR and archaeome) and different career stages to share their research and ideas. A key objective is to introduce attendees to oral microbiome organisms beyond bacteria, and illustrate the importance of key oral neglected microbes. Meanwhile, the meeting will promote collaborations and provide a great opportunity for trainees to interact with experts in the field and promote their research.

Learning Objectives
  • What is the role of the diverse group of Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR) and fungi that are now known to inhabit the oral cavity during health? What bacterial species are these fungi and CPR bacteria interacting with, and what is their role in oral disease processes?
  • Unlike bacteria, which have a universally conserved genomic region (16S rRNA), there is an enormous variety of genomic structures among viral species, making the study of virus difficult in large cohorts. What novel experimental and bioinformatic strategies can be developed to explore the role of the oral virome?
  • Oral archaeome exists in much smaller diversity and numbers than any other oral microbiome community members. Despite their small numbers, they can have impact on the oral dybiotic diseases. What are the latest update on oral archaeome and how can we expand this small yet important field?
