Session Description
Publishing a paper is a capstone goal at the outset of many projects and grants, yet the process is shrouded in guesswork and mystery to many trainees. Open access or not? A specialized or general journal? What are editors looking for in a cover letter? What does “first decision” mean? As a result, trainees are forced to learn about the publishing process through experience: a slow, ineffective, and sometimes demoralizing method. This symposium, intended for trainees of all types (e.g., dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students, dual-degree students, and post-docs), focuses on offering participants background on the publishing process after submission and skills for preparing their next (or first) publication for submission. Topics addressed will include how to select an appropriate journal, the role of editors in the publication process, the purpose of a cover letter, what reviewers are foremost concerned with, and other hard-earned advice. Featured panelists will include current editors-in-chief, associate editors, and experienced reviewers with rich backgrounds in mentoring trainees to demystify the publishing process. Following a brief presentation of the overall publication process and terminology, the symposium will feature each speaker discussing a specific aspect of publishing, informed by their expertise and real-life experiences, followed by a panel discussion with ample opportunity for question and answer with the audience.

Learning Objectives
  • Discuss the process a manuscript goes through after submission and how to select a journal while avoiding predatory publishers.
  • Understand the role of editors and reviewers in the publication process and how to communicate with them.
