2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Portland, Oregon. Session Description 
Following radiotherapy for the treatment of head and neck cancers, most patients experience loss of salivary function, often permanently. Hyposalivation as a result of radiotherapy or other salivary gland diseases (e.g., autoimmune Sjogren's), often leads to a host of health complications that reduce patient quality of life, including increased incidence of dental caries and oral infections, loss of taste, and difficulties swallowing or speaking. Current therapeutics, including artificial saliva and muscarinic receptor agonists to induce secretion, only provide temporary symptom relief. Thus, significant focus has been on understanding the regenerative process and using those findings to develop novel therapeutic strategies. This work, aided by innovative new techniques, has unveiled a diverse set of cellular players in the regenerative process. In this session, investigators who each study different cellular compartments in salivary gland regeneration, present their recent findings. This session aims to generate a more holistic picture of salivary gland regeneration and the cellular functions and signaling involved in the regenerative process.

  • Learn about recent studies, including those using innovative omics technologies, and how they illuminate the cellular diversity of salivary gland regeneration.
  • Generate a more holistic view of the diverse cellular players and their interactions in the salivary gland regenerative process.
  • Learn how current knowledge on the mechanisms of salivary gland regeneration and the cellular players can inform therapeutic strategies for regaining salivary function.
