2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Portland, Oregon. The meeting was attended by 2,054 individuals from 39 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the Annual Meeting. Session Description
This symposium will kick-off the year-long celebration of NIDCR's 75th Anniversary. It explores a brief history of the founding of NIDCR and its early activities, followed by reflections of the former directors, Drs. Harold C. Slavkin, Lawrence A. Tabak and Martha J. Somerman, who will provide their thoughts and insights into the challenges and advances made during the time of their directorships, along with the prospects for the future of the Institute. The current director, Dr. Rena D'Souza will also provide remarks on how the scientific strides made during the first 75 years has positioned the institute for further advances in the next 25 years. Following these reflections, participants will engage with the current and former directors in a fireside chat formatted discussion where they will be able to directly ask questions while moderated by the co-chairs. Additionally, Principal investigators (PIs) from over the lifespan of the Institute will present "Vignettes from the Division of Intramural Research". PIs Marian F. Young (hard tissue matrix proteins), Pamela G. Robey (cell and stem biology), Jay A. Chiorini (salivary gland and gene therapy), Niki M. Moutsopoulos (oral immunology), Ashok Kulkarni (mouse genetics), and Janice S. Lee (the clinical research enterprise) will detail notable advances made in their fields during their time at NIDCR. Participants will also directly engage and build rapport with the PIs. The session will conclude with Dr. D'Souza's acknowledgement of team members, editors and contributing authors of the "Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges" report.

Learning Objectives
  • The participant will become familiar with the three most recent directors of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and issues that they faced during their tenure, along with advances made by the DIR.
  • The participant will gain a perspective of the matters related to directing a successful institute that is focused on oral health, and research performed on the NIH campus.
  • The participant will hear from the former directors, and from the current director on the possibilities for the institute in the future, along with PIs from the NIDCR.
