2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting

The 2023 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Portland, Oregon. The meeting was attended by 2,054 individuals from 39 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the Annual Meeting. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

Session Description
Background: Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges called for the expansion and diversification of the nation's cadre of oral health researchers. Since 2005, scientific staff from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (Network) have mentored clinical researchers, helping them develop the applied scientific skills of oral health researchers.

Methods: This seminar targets dental researchers, faculty, and practitioners interested in practice-based research, and will include support for grant proposals. Scientists and biostatisticians will review the Network's support for study teams and will discuss research achievements and practitioner characteristics. Study topics will be reviewed, as well as best practices for developing scientific questions and research objectives. In small groups, attendees will develop a scientific question and 1-2 research objectives. Each group will include Network scientific staff with relevant skills for the topic and practitioner(s) to provide guidance.

Results: The Network has supported 56 studies; 7 are in progress. There are 4863 dentists (26% specialists) and 1692 hygienists enrolled. Members are 52% female, 8% Hispanic/Latino, 10% Asian, 5% Black/African American, and 75% White. Most (77%) dentists are in private practice. Topics related to dental care delivery, materials, technology, behavioral health, and oral health integration will be presented. Concepts for developing scientific questions and research objectives will be discussed in break-out sessions.

Conclusions: Conducting research within dental offices comes with operational constraints that affect study topic, design, scope, and data collection. This seminar will improve attendees' abilities to select study topics and define scientific questions and objectives, critical first steps for study design.
