2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

Session Description
Noma is represented in the WHO Global Oral Health Action Plan (2023-2030) under the 6 strategic objectives. In “Oral health governance” Action 9 states that in countries affected by noma, we need to develop and implement a national noma action plan, integrated with existing regional or national programmes, such as those targeting neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Under “Oral health research agendas” Actions 84 and 87 advocate large-scale population-based epidemiological studies to strengthen the evidence for prevention and control and that further research on the aetiology, prevention, therapy and rehabilitation in collaboration with WHO collaborating centres and academia.

While not specifically mentioning noma there are important references to oral health inequalities and if actions are to be effective noma will also need to be addressed under 3 of the other WHO strategic objectives “Oral health promotion and oral disease prevention”, “Health Workforce” and “Oral health information systems”. As an example Action 32 states that there is a need to conduct research to strengthen evidence for interventions that effectively target the determinants of oral health, including those that reduce oral health inequalities.

The proposed Workshop will bring together experts in the fields of Dental academia, epidemiology, surgery and the patient voice. The agenda will seek to be translational and action based, with a major underlying objective being support for the principle that noma should be designated an NTD as stated in Action 13, and if necessary to gather data that provides support for that.

Learning Objectives
  • Gain greater insights and understanding about the epidemiology / pathogenesis of noma, the diagnosis and clinical management.
  • Identify the gaps in the knowledge and understanding of the epidemiology / pathogenesis diagnosis and clinical management, with a view to implementing actions in line with the WHO Action plan.
  • Explore the socioeconomic impact, inequalities, including the human rights perspective, the issue of classification as a NTD and the appropriate public health interventions.
