2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

Session Description
Social inequalities in oral health outcomes are a persistent public health challenge. They are reported universally and reflect the key role played by social position of individuals and populations in determining who enjoys good oral health and who receives timely treatment for oral diseases.

It is fundamental to implement interventions that achieve reduction in social inequalities in oral health. A universal access to oral health care is one of the main strategies put forward to reducing social inequalities in oral health outcomes. The emphasis on oral health care as a critical intervention for reducing social inequalities in oral health is largely underpinned by the compartmentalisation of oral health care from general health care across many high- and low-income countries.

In this symposium, the speakers will give complementary talks that critically assess the oral health care systems and their role in addressing social inequalities in oral health. In addition, the role of oral health care will be contrasted with other population oral health interventions based on their capacity to prevent oral diseases and address social inequalities in oral health outcomes.

Key emphasis will be placed on the historical perspective and the variations in oral healthcare systems among countries. In addition, limitations of a narrow focus of policies on oral healthcare as only solutions for addressing social inequalities in oral health outcomes will also be discussed. The way forward for policy and research priorities will be discussed regarding the role of access to oral healthcare as an intervention for improving population oral health and reducing social inequalities in oral health outcomes.
