Session Description
Oral health is high on the global agenda following the adoption of the 2022 global strategy on oral health as part of the non-communicable disease agenda, at the 75th World Health Assembly. (1) Given the global burden of oral disease, workforce development, including the use of a diverse skill mix, to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) is crucial. Global workforce analysis drawing on data from the National Health Workforce Accounts highlights marked inequalities in oral health workforce capacity and distribution, with low-income settings and rural areas least well served. Addressing disparities in oral health workforce capacity and distribution in low- and middle-income countries, together with encouraging policies that educate and train a relevant workforce in support of oral health, are important elements of health systems strengthening. The global strategy for oral health includes the goal of achieving “UHC for oral health for all individuals and communities by 2030, enabling them to enjoy the highest attainable state of oral health and contributing to healthy and productive lives” (1), requires human resources to facilitate adequate health care delivery. Needs-led planning of health workforce, therefore, is important to explore innovative solutions and to inform building capacity and capability to deliver universal healthcare in the most appropriate manner. It includes the full spectrum of essential, quality health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation.

Many countries globally are seeking creative collaborative solutions to promoting health and addressing health inequalities. This symposium will draw on the expertise of researchers working at global, regional, and national levels (Brazil, England, Saudi Arabia) to inform action on Universal Health Coverage drawing on operational research modelling. The implications for education and training will be explored.
