2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
The IADR Ethics Committee presents this symposium that reviews the current state of ethical issues in different regions. Researchers have a moral, ethical, and legal responsibility to conduct research that promotes scientific advancement. Ethical guidance in research tends to focus on the need for researchers to show respect for study participants’ rights, dignity, and interests while upholding confidentiality and privacy. As such, the ethical principles of Bioethics are justifiable. However, health research is increasingly characterized by the need to promote the global sharing of health data and stored biosamples through solidarity and research collaborations. Several ethical challenges can arise in research, especially in those occurring in the global North-South and South-South divide, where diversities exist in the type of populations researched, the prevailing sociocultural belief systems, the different cultural interpretations of the human body, and the storage of bodily fluids and tissues for future research purposes, that could impact research decision-making in these settings. Lack of researcher awareness or sensitivity to these sociocultural nuances and the local context of research could influence public trust and support for research in these settings. This reiterates the need for committed community and stakeholder engagement as part of the research planning and development phase. In this sense, the IADR Code of Ethics presents a strong commitment to respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is therefore necessary to review the educational processes that contribute to the development of the capacity and understanding of researchers and students and promote their effective practice.
