2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
The need for standardized, international practice-based data on oral health and healthcare services is widely recognised, and a relevant standard set of outcomes has been developed recently (Riordain et al, 2021). However, there is very limited literature on the topic, despite the fact that such data would be relevant both for the planning and evaluation of oral health policies and services. To address this gap, FDI launched the Oral Health Observatory (OHO) project to provide a mechanism for standardized, international practice-based data collection that can be used to understand patterns of oral health, dental service provision and oral health inequalities. In the first phase, the OHO has taken place in 12 countries and uses a mobile app to collect data on patients’ oral health status, including clinical and subjective outcomes, and a range of determinants. This symposium will initially provide the background and key methodological features of the OHO project, while also critically reflecting on the feasibility of its implementation in different countries, including barriers and facilitators for routine data collection in primary dental care. This will be followed by examples of the data collected from the six countries so far: India, China, Japan, Colombia, Italy and Lebanon. The next paper will discuss how the collected data can be subjected to advanced analytical methodologies to facilitate understanding of the complex relationships between determinants and oral health outcomes, providing key information about the pathways to oral health. Finally, the Symposium will focus on one country that implemented the OHO project (Colombia) and discuss the potential of translating this information to inform advocacy for oral health, to reduce oral health inequalities and highlight the role of key stakeholders in this process.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the key challenges for the implementation of an international standardised practice-based data collection project
  • Provide an overview of the findings from the six countries who have provided standardised data so far: India, Italy, Colombia, Japan, Lebanon, and China
  • Provide knowledge on the potential to employ advanced modelling techniques in routinely collected practice-based data to facilitate in-depth understanding of the pathways to oral health
  • Discuss the translation of this information into oral health advocacy and the role of the key stakeholders
