2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
The oral cavity is the entry portal to a plethora of microbes including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In the past, the discussion of microbiological aspects of oral disease has traditionally focused on bacteria and fungi; however, viruses are attracting increasing attention as pathogens in oral inflammatory diseases. Viruses share a deep evolutionary relationship with the host, and provide beneficial functions by maintaining the “immune tone”. In contrast, eukaryotic viruses that infect host cells contribute to mild, self-limited acute or chronic infections with serious or fatal consequences in the oral and non-oral tissues. Recent investigations have demonstrated an abundance of certain viruses and either their direct or indirect enhancement of oral inflammatory diseases, suggesting an association between viruses, other oral microbes and host tissues producing disease. However, our understanding of oral manifestations of viruses and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. How oral viruses persist without manifesting clinical disease, impairing oral mucosal immune responses, and resistance to develop pathology are critical knowledge gaps. Dissection of the underlying pathways could accelerate development for biologics to improve oral health and quality of life.

We propose to dedicate a session on advances in oral virology with a focus on:
Characterization of oral viral assemblages and integration into the human genome across the lifespan
Viral interactions with oral microbes and impairment of host tissue and immune functions
Dissection of molecular and cellular mechanisms targeted by viral infection of oral cells
Assessment of antiviral and repurposed biologics in the treatment in oral diseases

Learning Objectives
  • Enhance understanding of viral etiology of oral diseases and viral interaction with oral microbes
  • Targeted impairment of oral mucosal immunity by viruses
  • Antivirals in the treatment of oral diseases
