Join the IADR Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network (GOHIRN) in an interactive and insightful webinar delving into the journey towards achieving global oral health equity. Our esteemed panel of speakers, comprised of seasoned experts in the field, will share their wealth of experience and insights. From the role of the media to research and clinical practice, the session will touch on the various avenues to effect change in global oral health. Tailored for and with early career researchers and students, this session is open to all. It aims to provide valuable guidance and resources to navigate the complexities of advancing oral health equity on a global scale. Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and connect with leaders in the field.

This panel will be held on Zoom and feature speakers who are leaders within the oral health equity space. Here, the panelists will discuss their current engagements and provide an overview of their personal journeys within the field, offering advice and mentorship to early career researchers and student attendees. Attendees will engage with panelists, inspiring creative solutions that are meaningful and culturally competent. This panel aims to empower early career researchers and students to fight for oral health for all, providing the tools and resources to continue working toward this effort. Together, we can work towards a future where access to oral health care is not a privilege but a right afforded to all, regardless of geographic or socioeconomic status.

  • Discuss the current landscape of global oral health inequalities and ongoing research and policy efforts that are aimed at addressing these disparities
  • Highlight the impact of research, clinical care, media, and policy in advancing oral health equality worldwide
  • Learn of opportunities panelists engaged in and avenues of community involvement, make meaningful connections, become involved within the GOHIRN network, and create links to engage in future research, policy, and clinical care collaborations

  • Mary Otto

    Mary Otto is a Washington, D.C.-based independent journalist and author. She began writing about oral health at The Washington Post, where she covered social issues, including health care and poverty. In 2007, she wrote about 12-year-old Deamonte Driver, a Maryland child covered by Medicaid who died after suffering complications from a dental abscess. The death of the boy spurred state and national reforms. After leaving the Post in 2008, Otto spent an academic year studying oral health at Harvard as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow; she has also served as a Visiting Journalist Fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation. She is the author of the book "Teeth: the Story of Beauty, Inequality and the Struggle for Oral Health In America" published in 2017 by The New Press.

  • Lois Cohen

    Consultant and Paul G. Rogers Ambassador for Global Health Research, she is a research sociologist, retired from the U.S. Government’s National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) where she last served as the Associate Director for International Health. Having edited and authored four volumes on the social sciences and dentistry and published 150+ articles in professional peer-reviewed journals, she is purported to be the architect of the behavioral & social sciences in the oral health field. She co-directed two major multinational collaborative studies on oral health systems with the World Health Organization (WHO) and led a WHO Collaborative Center for 20 years. Currently, she serves as a consultant to the NIDCR, the WHO as well as various universities and organizations focused on global health through oral health. Awards and/or honorary lectures in her name are given annually at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, the International Association for Dental Research, Purdue University and at St. Joseph’s University.

  • Azeez Butali

    Professor Azeez Butali is a Professor of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine and Professor in the
    Iowa Institute for Oral Health in the UI College of Dentistry; and the Gilbert Lily endowed Professor of
    Diagnostic Sciences. Professor Butali is the director of the African Craniofacial Anomalies Network (AfriCRAN), a member of NIDCR National Advisory Council Working Group for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Workforce Diversity, a mentor for the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research Mentoring and Inclusive Network for a Diverse Workforce of the Future, a member of the Smile Train Research and Innovations Advisory Council, a member of the Nominating Committee of the American Society for Human Genetics, Director of the International Association for Dental Research Craniofacial Biology Group, Executive member of the African Society for Dental and Craniofacial Genetics, and member of the Facebase Scientific Advisory Council. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS), a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (FAMedS), and Fellow of theInternational College of Dentists (FICD). He is the recipient of the 2024 American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) Emerging Leader Award, 2023 SCADA Faculty Adviser Award and the 2023 University of Iowa Leadership in Research Award. His lab discovered CTNNA2 and SULT2A as cleft palate candidate genes and AFDN as cleftinggene through GWAS and WGS. Dr Butali is currently leading efforts to translate discovery to health and the prevention of oral, dental, and craniofacial diseases.

  • Rachel Kulchar

    Rachel J. Kulchar (she/hers) is a recent graduate of Princeton University (obtaining a Chemistry degree) and an incoming DDS/PhD student at UCLA. She is currently pursuing a postbac at the NIDCR where she serves on various committees aimed at driving forward health equity, dismantling health disparities, and improving global oral health. Rachel is the Student Representative for the International Association of Dental Research Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network and is excited to advance oral health equality through her research, advocacy, and clinical pursuits.

  • Kristina Wanyonyi- Kay

    Kristina is Research Programme Leader and Senior Research Associate at The Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute, University of Cambridge where she leads research on learning health systems for healthcare improvement She has a degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Nairobi, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Dundee and a PhD in health services research and population health from King’s College London. Kristina is a member of the Health and Science Committee of the British Dental Association and President of the Global Oral Health Inequalities Network of IADR

    Kristina’s research interests are in improving effectiveness and efficiency in health services and addressing health inequalities.
