Dr. Taewan Kim completed his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech University. He then pursued a Master of Science in Medical Physiology at Case Western Reserve University before obtaining his DDS from the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, he actively engaged in biomedical research as a dental student. Subsequently, he embarked on his periodontology residency and Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) combined program at Penn Dental Medicine. Throughout this period, he demonstrated high productivity, publishing multiple papers, and receiving a prestigious K08 award from the National Institutes of Health. One of his current research focuses is on the effect of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans toxin on human host phagocytic function.
Dr. Smruti Nair completed her Bachelor's in Dentistry from Yerala Medical Trust and Research Centre's Dental College and Hospital in India. She then pursued specialization in Periodontology and Oral Implantology at Padmashree Dr. D.Y.Patil Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, India, graduating in 2011. Her research during this time extensively focused on Periodontal Intra-osseous Defects and Surgical interventions for the same. She studied Periodontal regeneration using conventional flap surgery compared to bone graft (using Novabone Dental Putty material) and evaluated the outcomes using CT scans. Additionally, she conducted a detailed review on the role of Genetics in Periodontal Disease. Following this, she pursued a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering, where she focused on morphological and mechanical characterization of colloidal gels and the endothelial cell response to varied colloidal networks. Subsequently, she began her Doctor of Science in Dentistry at Penn Dental Medicine and received a prestigious R90 postdoctoral trainee fellowship from the National Institutes of Health. As a highly accomplished periodontist-scientist, one of her current research focuses on efficient, cost-effective drug delivery, such as using oral proinsulin bioencapsulated in plant cells.
