A family-owned business is defined by one in which two or more family members are involved and the majority of ownership or control lies within those family members. Many of today's IAM member companies are family-owned businesses. Not only do they play a valuable role in contributing to world’s economy, but they hold years of industry knowledge passed down from one generation to the next.

If you work in a family business, you probably already know that it can be a complex environment. If you're an "outsider" – not a member of the family circle – then your position can be challenging.

This webinar will address what some family business owners have done to put proper structures in place to deal with conflicts, how they boost employee morale, and how their family values contribute to business success.

Additionally, we’ll gain insightful information from the panelists who are not related to the family to discuss how to break the glass ceiling in order to succeed.

Georgia began her career in 1980 and has held numerous leadership positions with some of the industry’s leading household goods moving agencies and forwarding companies. Georgia served as Chairperson of the International Association of Movers (IAM) Executive Committee, was the first woman elected to the organization’s chairmanship and she continues to contribute to numerous programs advocating improvements for the industry. Georgia was inducted into the IAM Hall of Honor in 2020.
Her experience includes directing all aspects of the operations, finances, technology and business planning within the Domestic and International commercial household goods and government personnel property programs. She focuses on organizational assessments, operational processes, government contracts, regulation compliance, technology solutions and integration, talent administration, financial management and strategic business expansion.

Georgia has contributed to the development of IAM Learning, the association’s initiatives to enhance communications with members. IAM Technology Partnership, The Shipper’s Guide, the Code of Ethics, the expansion of the Association Member’s Management Board, the Receivable Protection Plan and the Hall of Honor. She has hosted many Learning Labs on How To Network Like A Pro.

Carlos Avalos

At a young age, Carlos Avalos’ grandfather and father taught him the ins and outs of the moving business. As he grew older, it was a natural fit for him work in the family moving business. His studies earned him a degree in Business Administration in Canada and a Master’s degree in Supply Chain and Logistics in Spain. Carlos’ work experience included working in the banking industry in Ecuador and in a global transfer company in Germany, but the moving industry kept calling him back. Carlos is involved with many industry associations and was elected as a LACMA Next board member. Recently, Carlos opened his own moving company and is currently developing new projects with Sandhill Ecuador.
Lori Hickey

Bliss Moving & Logistics Srl

Born in the USA, Lori grew up in Los Angeles during the crazy 70's. She carries telltale signs still today, like her independent spirit and high value of relationships that lured her to Italy to explore its iconic sense of family. She never left, and over the past 25 years Lori has remained in Italy enjoying the Dolce Vita and a satisfying career in Global Mobility specialized in serving the expat and diplomatic communities' needs.
First recruited into the industry by a multinational relocation company to help manage key accounts, it wasn't long before Lori changed course to collaborate with family-owned companies offering her a more agile structure and better fit.
Lori has maintained this heading ever since, living a well-balanced work-family life and keeping herself actively engaged in community leadership — a 'thing’ she is very passionate about. She was awarded "Most Distinguished Global Citizen" for her inspiration & contributions toward a more sustainable community life, and given 'Merit of Honor' from the President of the Italian Republic.
With a background in advanced planning, Lori also kept an eye to the future. Following her deepening hunch that technology was on course to revolutionize the industry, she veered onto a path that led to a place beyond her imagination. In 2019 she joined Bliss Corporation - a dynamic, future-ready company where she linked her decades of experience and skills to their creative, entrepreneurial culture, aligned herself to their forefront stance on the digital evolution — and is excited to ride the crest of the wave into the future.

Being the a member of the 4th generation of Marx's at New World it’s safe to say the industry is in my blood!
