A Primer on Drug Pricing in the United States

This session will provide an overview of drug pricing in the United States, with the goal of helping life care planners better understand out-of-pocket costs. We’ll look at costs for Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial insurance. We will also review cash pricing and have a question and answer session to clarify points that may come up in life care planning practice.

Participants will be able to:
  • Describe the drug supply chain in the United States
  • Understand how drugs are priced throughout the supply chain
  • Discuss the effects of insurance and discount cards on drug pricing
  • Describe how pharmacies price medications without insurance (cash/U&C)
