This webinar, hosted on 26 July 2022, is the third webinar of the IASP 2022 Global Year - Translating Pain Knowledge to Practice. The webinar is titled: ‘The Restorative Model: Antiracism in Pain Research and Clinical Care’ and is presented by Anna Hood, PhD, Janelle Letzen, PhD, Calia Morais, PhD, and Joletta Belton, MSc.
This webinar will provide an opportunity to discuss the historical context and implications for applying an antiracism framework across all forms of pain research. The presenters will provide examples and reframes to illustrate how antiracism practices are a shared commitment to reach equity in pain science.
The information discussed will be centered around cultural humility to raise awareness and allow the audience to reflect and make changes in their work.

Anna Hood, PhD
Dr Anna Hood is a lecturer in the Division of Psychology and Mental Health. She is trained as a clinical psychologist and is licensed in the US and HCPC registered in the UK. She was previously a postdoctoral fellow here at UCL, Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. Her graduate and clinical training were completed in the US at Washington University in St. Louis, Children’s Minnesota, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She has been the recipient of pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships from the National Institutes of Health to fund research focused on the cognitive and psychological challenges faced by children and young adults with sickle cell disease. Specifically, her research aims to 1) promote self-management, patient engagement, and medication adherence, 2) identify interventions and the underlying neural mechanisms to improve cognitive impairments in patients with sickle cell disease, and 3) include an anti-racism framework in research, psychological treatments, and the clinical care of patients experiencing pain.

Janelle Letzen, PhD
Dr. Letzen completed her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida in 2017 and joined BMRL shortly after. Her research interested broadly focuses on the biopsychosocial mechanisms to enhance clinical outcomes, especially among under deserved groups. Her current work seeks to understand how experiencing racism impacts: [1] sleep as a downstream mechanism of racialized inequities in pain symptoms, and [2] placebo analgesia as a downstream mechanism of racialized inequities in pain treatment responses.

Calia Morais, PhD
Dr. Calia Morais is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Morais is a first-generation immigrant from Peru, first-generation college graduate trained in clinical psychology and a pain researcher. Dr. Morais is interested in cultural adaptations of assessment tools and psychosocial treatments for chronic pain management. Dr. Morais has been recognized for her commitment to pain disparities research, she is a NIH/NIA RCMAR scholar and is the current co-chair of the Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-racism SIG of the U.S. Association for the Study of Pain (USASP).

Joletta Belton, MSc
Joletta Belton, MSc, is a medically retired firefighter/paramedic who has lived with pain since January 2010. She is co-chair of IASP’s Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy and is the first Patient and Public Partnerships Editor at the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Her advocacy work centers on equitably integrating lived experience into the study, research, and treatment of pain. She has presented on this topic at pain conferences and in classrooms around the world and has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters. She has also been a Patient Partner on research projects in Canada, Australia, and the UK.
