MEETING CHAIRS


Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, is a nationally and internationally recognized expert and pioneer in refractive, cornea, and cataract surgery. He is a trustee of Dartmouth Medical Center, serves as clinical professor of ophthalmology at NYU, and is a founding partner of Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island in New York. Dr Donnenfeld has performed surgery on more than 100,000 patients, participated in more than 60 FDA clinical trials, and authored 1000s of articles relating to refractive surgery, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, and external diseases, among other topics.
Cathleen McCabe, MD Cathleen McCabe, MD, is one of the foremost eye surgeons today, specializing in bladeless cataract surgery and LASIK procedures, but also routinely performs laser treatments for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. She serves as chief medical officer at Eye Health America™ and is medical director of The Eye Associates in Bradenton, Florida. She has performed more than 50,000 cataract surgeries and more than 17,000 LASIK procedures, and has participated in numerous clinical trials, including innovations in intraocular lenses, perioperative medications, glaucoma medications and devices, dry eye treatments, and presbyopia correction.
Yoshihiro Yonekawa, MD Yoshihiro Yonekawa, MD, is a nationally and internationally recognized adult and pediatric retina specialist at Wills Eye Hospital and Mid Atlantic Retina. He serves as assistant professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is a visiting assistant professor at Kyorin University in Tokyo, Japan. Dr Yonekawa has participated in more than 75 clinical trials and has contributed more than 300 original papers, editorials, and textbook chapters to help advance the field.


SESSION FACULTY


Brad Sutton, OD, FAAO Dr. Brad Sutton is a Clinical Professor at the Indiana University School of Optometry and is the Chief of Service at the Indianapolis Eye Care Center. Dr. Sutton’s main areas of clinical interest include ocular disease and surgical co-management. He has given nearly 500 continuing education lectures on topics related to ocular disease at the local, state, national, and international level, and has published extensively. He was named the Young OD of the year in both Tennessee and Indiana, has received the Indiana Optometric Association’s Educator of the Year award, and has served as the President of the Optometric Retina Society.
Shan Lin, MD Dr. Lin is Co-Director of Research at the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco. He graduated from UC Berkeley for his undergraduate education and achieved his medical degree at Tufts Medical School. His internship, ophthalmology residency, and glaucoma fellowship were completed at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the former Director of the Glaucoma Service and Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF. He is an author on over 250 peer-reviewed publications. His areas of research interest include angle-closure glaucoma, anterior segment imaging, and cyclodestructive procedures. He is currently Executive Vice President of the World Glaucoma Association. His past leadership positions include Chair of the American Glaucoma Society’s Patient Care Committee, Chair of the Glaucoma Section of the Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Chair of the American Glaucoma Society’s Document Review Subcommittee, and President, Vice President and Program Chair of the Pacific Coast Oto-Ophthalmological Society (PCOOS). His past honors include the Heed Fellowship Award, the American Glaucoma Society Clinician-Scientist Award, and the Mid-Career Award by the AGS. He has also been funded as a Principal Investigator by the National Institute of Health, including as a PI for the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) study. He has been selected for “Best Doctors” in the U.S. He is currently on the editorial boards for the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of Glaucoma.
Pinakin Davey, OD Dr. Pinakin Davey is a Professor and Director of Clinical Research at the Western University of Health Sciences. He earned a Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry and a Ph.D. from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England. His post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Louisville for three years was focused on improving imaging techniques in glaucoma. His research is focused on retinal physiology and glaucoma. He has authored over 75 international publications and has given over 500 presentations nationally and internationally. He is a fellow of the ARVO and AAO.
Maria Sampalis, OD Dr. Sampalis graduated from New England College of Optometry in 2007. She is the Founder of Corporate Optometry on Facebook, which has over 31,000 members. Her social media network reaches over 65k eye care professionals. She was Young OD of the Year in Rhode Island in 2016, Vision Monday’s Influential Woman in Optometry in 2019 and World Council of Optometry Eye Care Hero 2020. Dr. Sampalis practices in Rhode Island. She is a consultant and speaker for various companies in the industry.
Basil Williams, MD Dr. Basil K. Williams Jr. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, FL. He is the department’s Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and specializes in ocular oncology and vitreoretinal surgery and diseases. He completed his residency, vitreoretinal fellowship and chief residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute followed by an Ocular Oncology fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital. He was born in St. George’s Grenada and grew up in the Bronx, NY. His research interests pertain to health care disparities, adult and pediatric surface and intraocular tumors, and vitreoretinal surgical topics.
Elise Kramer, OD Dr. Elise Kramer is a residency-trained optometrist in Miami FL who specializes in ocular surface disease and specialty contact lens design and fitting. Her Doctorate degree was awarded in Optometry from the Université de Montréal in 2012. During her fourth year, she completed her internship in ocular disease at the Eye Centers of South Florida and went on to complete her residency at the Miami VA Medical Center. Her time there included training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s top eye hospital. After her residency, Dr. Kramer became a fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS) and now serves as the secretary for the SLS. Dr. Kramer is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE), a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and of the the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA). She is also the Delegate of International Relations for the Italian Association of Scleral Lenses (AILeS). Dr. Kramer has published several important articles and reviews and is participates in clinical research trials. She enjoys lecturing all around the world in several different languages about ocular surface disease and specialty lenses.
Marjan Farid, MD Dr. Marjan Farid is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Director of Cornea, Refractive & Cataract Surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, University of California Irvine. Her clinical practice is divided between patient care, teaching and research. In collaboration with the Holland Foundation for Sight Restoration, she is the founder of the Severe Ocular Surface Disease Program at UCI. Her research interests focus on corneal surgery, specifically the use of the femtosecond laser for corneal transplantation. She performs ocular surface stem cell transplants as well as artificial corneal transplantation for the treatment of patients with severe ocular surface disease. She serves as the Chair of the Corneal Clinic Committee of ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery). Her work is published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. She has authored multiple textbook chapters and travels extensively to present her work at national and international meetings.
Lisa J Faia, MD Dr. Faia is a board certified ophthalmologist with special interest and expertise in the surgical and medical management of uveitis, as well as vitreoretinal diseases, such as diabetes, macular degeneration, and vein occlusions. Currently, she is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, American Uveitis Society, American Medical Association, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Association in Research of Vision and Ophthalmology. She is involved in a wide array of both basic science and clinical studies in uveitic and vitreoretinal diseases. Dr. Faia has presented nationally and internationally on the topics of uveitis and retina and authored and/or co-authored multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews on these subjects.
Mohammad Rafieetary, OD, FAAO Dr. Mohammad Rafieetary is a consultative optometric physician who has been in practice at the Charles Retina Institute (CRI) since 1996. Dr. Rafieetary is a graduate of Boston University and received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He completed a residency in Primary Care Optometry and Ocular Disease at the Southern College of Optometry (SCO) and the Memphis Health Center. Upon completion of his residency in 1989, Dr. Rafieetary joined SCO’s faculty and served as an Associate Professor and the Chief of Advanced Ocular Disease Service and at the Southern College of Optometry until he joined CRI.Dr. Rafieetary has received several awards including the SCO Faculty of the Year, American Diabetic Association’s National Achievement of Distinction Award, and the Tennessee Associations of Optometric Physician’s Optometrist of the Year.
Priya Vakharia, MD Dr. Vakharia did undergraduate studies at The Pennsylvania State University’s Accelerated Medical Program, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Science and graduated with highest distinction. She received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where she received an Honorable Mention for the Carroll R. Mullen Memorial Prize in Ophthalmology, became a member of both the George McClellan Surgical Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, in the top 1% of her class. Dr. Vakharia’s post-doctoral training consisted of an internship in Internal Medicine at Lankenau Medical Center in Pennsylvania, and a residency in Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where she was Chief Resident. After her residency, Dr. Vakharia completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Tufts New England Eye Center/Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. She then worked in DC prior to relocating to the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Vakharia is an often invited speaker at major national meetings and was recently voted a “Top 40 under 40” Ophthalmologist nationally by Ophthalmology Management. She is on the executive committee of the Vit-Buckle Society. She is actively involved in clinical trials both as principal investigator and subinvestigator, has written numerous papers and book chapters, and is a reviewer for several academic journals. In her spare time, Dr. Vakharia enjoys indoor cycling, cooking, and spending time with her family
Preeya Gupta, MD Dr. Gupta earned her medical degree at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She fulfilled her residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina, where she earned the K. Alexander Dastgheib Surgical Excellence Award, and then completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis. She served on the faculty at Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina as a Tenured Associate Professor of Ophthalmology from 2011-2021.
Avni Finn, MD Dr. Finn was born in London, but moved to the United States at a young age, growing up in Claremont, California. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from Stanford University and also minored in Spanish. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Cap and Gown Women's Honor Society. Dr. Finn then went on to pursue both her medical degree and a business degree at the Dartmouth School of Medicine and the Tuck School of Business in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dr. Finn completed her ophthalmology residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. While in residency she received the Gragoudas Prize for her clinical research. She also was a recipient of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship, awarded nationally to top clinical residents in ophthalmology. Dr. Finn then performed a fellowship in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. During fellowship, she received the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation award, given select outstanding fellows in vitreoretinal surgery. Dr. Finn is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She has published numerous original research articles on a wide variety of retinal diseases including new techniques for macular hole surgery, the use of intraoperative OCT imaging, and biomarkers of atrophy and scar in macular degeneration. She has also published several book chapters on a wide variety of retinal and ophthalmic topics including diabetic retinopathy, macular hole surgery, ocular trauma, and endophthalmitis among other topics. She is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Constance Okeke, MD Dr. Constance Okeke, MD, MSCE, is an Ivy-League trained, highly regarded cataract surgeon and a leader in micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). She is known for her pioneering accomplishments in treating glaucoma and cataracts, including introducing advanced techniques such as Trabectome, iStent, iStent Inject, Kahook Dual Blade, Visco360, and Trab360 to the Hampton Roads area, and was the first in the country to combine MIGS with femtosecond laser in cataract surgery. Dr. Okeke has been a part of Virginia Eye Consultants since July 2009 and currently serves as the Lead Glaucoma Specialist, in addition to serving as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Okeke's extensive experience in clinical research is evident through her involvement in designing and implementing numerous clinical trials, as well as her role as a reviewer for various professional journals. She is dedicated to peer-to-peer education and has provided proctoring and training initiatives to support innovative glaucoma treatment techniques. With her expertise, she has contributed to several renowned publications and serves on the editorial advisory boards of respected journals such as Glaucoma Today, EyeWorld, Collaborative Eye, Eyes on Eyecare, Ophthalmology360, and Glaucoma Physician. Dr. Okeke's commitment to patient education is evident through her educational YouTube channels, iGlaucoma (for eye care professionals) and iGlaucomaPatient (for patients), as well as her books, including The Building Blocks of Trabectome Surgery Vol.1, which guides ophthalmologists in performing Trabectome and goniotomy surgeries, and The Glaucoma Guidebook: Learn the Risks and Save Your Sight, published by Johns Hopkins University Press in January 2023. Her remarkable achievements have been recognized through prestigious awards, including her inclusion in The Ophthalmologist's Global Power List 2021 Top 100 Females and Power List 2022 Top 100.
Neel Vaidya, MD Neel S. Vaidya, MD, MPH completed both his Bachelor of Science and Medical degrees at The Ohio State University where he was enrolled in the accelerated honors BS/MD program. After completing his undergraduate and medical school training at The Ohio State University, Dr. Vaidya moved to Chicago to pursue his residency training in ophthalmology at Loyola University Medical Center, where he was elected Chief Resident. After completing advanced training in cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery during his Fellowship with Chicago Cornea Consultants™, he joined the practice as a full-time associate in the summer of 2021.Dr. Vaidya is passionate about providing medical and surgical care for patients with a variety of ophthalmologic diseases, with a specific interest in corneal transplantation and refractive surgery. Dr. Vaidya also has an interest in disorders of the eyelid and oculoplastic surgery as well. Dr. Vaidya’s research interests include optimizing endothelial keratoplasty techniques, evaluating new treatments for dry eye and other ocular surface diseases, and evaluating refractive outcomes in patients undergoing cataract surgery. Dr. Vaidya has published several articles in several well-respected peer-review journals, has served as a reviewer for journal articles and research grants, co-authored book chapters, and has presented at national medical conferences. He has been offered a faculty appointment at Rush University Medical Center.
Jennifer Loh, MD Jennifer Loh, MD is a board -certified ophthalmologist practicing in Miami, Florida with a focus on cataract- refractive surgery and dry eye disease. She is founder and medical director of her practice, Loh Ophthalmology Associates, which she started in 2016. Dr. Loh also spends her time as a clinical and surgical attending for the Larkin Hospital Ophthalmology Residency program. She is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, where she completed both medical school and ophthalmology residency. Currently, she has been active in speaking at national ophthalmology meetings and in publishing articles in ophthalmology trade journals. She also served as the 2019 president of Cedars-Aspens, an anterior segment group consisting of some of the country’s top key opinion leaders and is a member of both AECOS and the Refractive Surgery Alliance. Dr. Loh has recently been honored with being named one of Newsweek America’s Best Eye Doctors in 2023 and 2022, the 2018 Rising Star Award from OWL (Ophthalmic World Leaders), The Ophthalmologist Power List Rising Star Award in 2017, and the Alcon Outstanding Female Leader Award in 2016. On a local level, Dr. Loh was recently named as a Top Doctor In (and near) Coral Gables by Castle-Connelly. Dr. Loh graduated summa cum laude from Butler University and completed both her medical school training and residency at Indiana University School of Medicine. As a medical student, she was inducted into the IU chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, which focuses on identifying students and physicians who exemplify compassionate care. Dr. Loh was also fortunate to serve as chief resident for both her intern year program and ophthalmology residency. In her spare time, Dr. Loh enjoys skiing and traveling the world with her husband and 4 year old son .
Nathan Radcliffe, MD Nathan M. Radcliffe, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is an educator, enthusiast and early adopter of interventional glaucoma approaches including laser, drug delivery and microinvasive surgery (MIGS). He is the Chair of the Glaucoma Clinical Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and is the Glaucoma Day course co-director. He has published extensively in the peer reviewed literature and is the Chief Medical Editor of the Glaucoma Physician publication. He has been treating glaucoma patients in New York City and the Bronx for 14 years.
Leslie O’Dell, OD, FAAO Dr. O’Dell focuses on the management of ocular disease including glaucoma, dry eye, and diabetic eye disease as the Clinical Director of Medical Optometry America in York, PA. Dr. O’Dell graduated from Salus College of Optometry in 2003 and completed a residency at the Baltimore VA Hospital. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry, a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and a member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, Tear Film, and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), AOA and Central PA Optometric Society. Most recently, Dr. O’Dell has been selected to participate in the TFOS Dry Eye Workshop (TFOS DEWSII) initiative and is one of six TFOS Global Ambassadors for the United States. She has published many articles both nationally and internationally and lectures on topics including glaucoma, advancements in dry eye disease, diabetic eye disease and the management of surgical patients.
James P. Dunn, MD James P. Dunn, MD, is Director of the Uveitis Unit in the Retina Division at Wills Eye Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He completed medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School and residency at New York University, followed by fellowships in Cornea/External Disease at the Jules Stein Eye Institute/UCLA School of Medicine and Uveitis at the Proctor Foundation/UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He was Assistant and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at The Wilmer Eye Institute at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1991-2013 and residency program director from 1998-2013. He joined the faculty at Wills Eye Hospital in 2014. He has been the principal site investigator for multiple National Eye Institute- and industry sponsored clinical trials in the treatment of uveitis and its complications. Dr. Dunn has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in the area of infectious and immunologically mediated ocular disease and the ocular complications of AIDS. He is a member of the American Uveitis Society and has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad in the areas of ocular inflammatory disease, ocular infections, and residency training. He is a reviewer for numerous journals, including Ophthalmology, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the New England Journal of Medicine, and is an assistant editor for American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Service Award. His areas of interest include intraocular drug delivery, immunosuppressive therapy in patients with uveitis, infectious uveitis, ocular complications of HIV/AIDS, cataract surgery in patients with uveitis, and uveitic macular edema.
Kendall Donaldson, MD Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and cornea specialist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute completed her residency training and cornea/external disease fellowship at Bascom Palmer in 2004. Prior to ophthalmology she completed a Master’s degree in anatomy and physiology, serving as an instructor and eventually directing the anatomy labs for the University of Maryland throughout the course of her undergraduate and graduate education. During her ophthalmology training, she also pursued a certificate program in Management through the Wharton School for Business preparing her to become the Medical Director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the Plantation satellite upon its opening in November of 2004. Since that time, the satellite has grown to include 16 doctors who rotate through the facility providing patients with a full spectrum of ophthalmic services including the highly specialized care available at the Ocular Surface Center in Plantation. In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Donaldson has also enjoyed working with the residents and fellows and served as co-director of the cornea fellowship from 2013 to 2020. She continues to enjoy teaching surgical skills and working on research projects with the residents and fellows on a daily basis. She travels to give over a hundred and fifty lectures annually on a local, national and international levels on cataract surgery and corneal disease. She has authored a variety of peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed articles and book chapters. She has also organized, moderated, and lectured at many local and national meetings and served on several AAO and ASCRS committees. Dr. Donaldson has received many awards including Ocular Surgery News Top 300 doctors each year, Florida Superdoctors, Leading Physicians of the World, and the MillenialEye Outstanding Female Leader Award in 2016. She was also selected to be one of the top 100 most influential female figures in ophthalmology in 2021 on The Ophthalmologist Power List. Dr. Donaldson’s primary research interests are in the area of advancements in cataract surgery, and in particular, laser-assisted cataract surgery, and severe ocular surface disease. She performs various types of corneal transplantation procedures, laser vision correction procedures, ocular surface reconstruction, and cataract surgery. In her free-time she enjoys spending time with her family in Florida, playing tennis, paddle boarding, and playing the piano with her 3 children.
