Small-Group Reading Instruction: Evidence, Impact, and Practice

Original Presentation Date: September 30, 2026, 5:00 p.m.–6:30 p.m. ET

Small-group reading instruction is a targeted teaching approach that provides focused support, practice, and feedback to students with similar reading needs. When implemented effectively, it can accelerate reading growth while meeting learners where they are. But what does that actually look like in practice?

Join Julie W. Ankrum, Lisa White, Brigid Gala, and members of the ILA Administrator Collaborative as they walk you through the essential elements of effective small-group reading instruction—and how to bring them together in your own classroom.

Through real-world examples, videos of classroom instruction, and usable strategies supported by research, you’ll learn how effective teachers:

  • Use assessment data to identify instructional priorities
  • Form flexible groups that respond to students' changing needs
  • Design concise, high-impact lessons that maximize engagement and instructional time
  • Provide immediate, actionable feedback that builds reading proficiency and learner confidence

Whether you're exploring how to implement small-group reading instruction or refining your current approach, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of its essential elements—and the confidence to put them into practice.
