OVERVIEW:The American Inns of Court's National Advocacy Training Program (NATP) is an intensive two day training program conducted in a courtroom style setting with two small groups of eight – ten participants. Two facilitators – British judges or barristers from the Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) in London – lead each group using the six-step Hampel method of advocacy training. In order to level the experience playing field, the training is based on a case set before the International Criminal Court (ICC) developed specifically for the NATP.
Who should attend?Designed for any attorney looking to develop or hone their courtroom presentation skills, the majority of participants find themselves within two to ten years of practice. Attorneys who have been practicing longer but without the opportunity to argue in court may also find value in the program.
All participants should feel comfortable working in a group and receiving public critiques of their performances. This is an unparalleled training opportunity, but don't take our word for it - read what NATP alumni thought about their experience and what they got out of the program.
THE training:The program is a hybrid learning event with some online work required in advance of the live training: it may include watching pre-recorded presentations, reading case materials or attending live online events. The face-to-face training - held at the Federal Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals - happens over two full days:
- Monday, September 20th (8:30am – 5:30pm ET)
- Tuesday, September 21st (8:30am – 5:30pm ET)
- Active Inn of Court Members: $925
- Inn of Court Alumni: $1025
- Non-Member Attorneys: $1125
continuing legal education:The program will be worth 12 - 14 general CLE credits in most jurisdictions. Participants who want to receive CLE credit are encouraged to apply ASAP so we can ensure enough time to get the program approved.
What about covid?Should the coronavirus not be under control by the time this program is to take place, we will pivot to a virtual option; participants will receive a refund of any payment over the virtual program amount. That decision will be made sometime in June 2021.
