Course Facilitator and Syllabus: Civility in the Practice of Law (2024)

course facilitator and syllabus

This course will be facilitated by Civility in the Practice of Law alumna, Bonnie J. Badgewick, Esq. In addition to participating in a past iteration, Bonnie is a longtime Bencher member of the Joan Loring Wing American Inn of Court in Rutland, VT. Her firm, Woodstock Law, PC, is a boutique litigation and general practice law firm which has been serving clients throughout Vermont and New Hampshire for more than 25 years.

I grew up in a small Vermont town where my father practiced for many years. I knew from an early age that I wanted to practice law, (although my father would have much preferred that I went fishing, like my brothers did). And though I left to go to college and law school, Vermont is my home, and I returned to practice law here.

Our firm’s primary focus is on the defense of litigated matters in state and federal court, along with an active local general practice focusing on real estate transactions and land use, estate planning and probate, and family law, my practice focuses primarily on civil insurance defense. I proudly practice in all state courts, federal court, and in front of administrative agencies. I also enjoy acting as a mediator and assisting parties in finding suitable and reasonable resolutions through our alternative dispute resolution process.

Our attorneys are active members of local and national professional legal associations and regularly provide counseling and education for corporate and institutional clients. We are also active members of many local and statewide organizations and non-profit groups, as well as enthusiastic citizens of our local communities.

Our mission is simple: to provide excellent service for our clients in a cost-effective manner. We take a results-oriented approach to each legal problem we tackle for our clients, and strive to obtain the best outcome possible. We particularly enjoy helping our clients navigate complicated legal issues that require strategic thinking and creative lawyering. My history has offered me a variety of mentors from the Vermont bench and bar over the years, and I am grateful for those lessons and experiences. My goal for all clients, and those who utilize any of my legal services, is to provide a professional and civil experience, without detracting from the high standards of law upon which our firm was founded.

how i stay civil!

When I started practicing law, I needed an additional physical outlet to stay healthy and mentally sharp. Our firm sponsored our involvement annually in a local seven mile race. Having a competitive spirit from high school and college sports which never went away, I ran that first race and was hooked. I have run more than twenty marathons, numerous half marathons, and other smaller races. I am always on the hunt for a new training challenge. I also teach indoor cycling at a local Athletic Club in the winter months.
