U.S. Citizenship: Keeping the Dream Alive

This CLE program will provide a brief exploration of the legal history of U.S. citizenship policy from colonial times through today, with a particular focus on the constricted pathways to citizenship for “unpopular groups.” Discussion topics include:

  • English law and influence on U.S. citizenship policy
  • Citizenship and the U.S. Constitution
  • Early naturalization and immigration laws
  •  Dred Scott v. Sandford, the 14th Amendment, and United States v. Wong Kim Ark
  • Pathways to citizenship for unpopular groups
  • Modern-day threats to birthright citizenship.
