It is our pleasure to present to you, on behalf of the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA), this new webinar Family caregiving for persons with dementia in Asia – Strategies/Challenges.
As with all programs in the IPA Webinar Series, this presentation is intended as an educational event on topics that are timely and relevant to the field of mental health for older adults.
All over the world people take care of their family members living with dementia. Nevertheless, there are huge differences in cultural norms regarding caregiving, economical situations and caregiving facilities. In this program we hear perspectives from the Asia Pacific region, including China, Indonesia, Japan and Taiwan.

DY Suharya, MPH
DY Suharya is the Regional Director of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) Asia Pacific Region and Founder of Alzheimer’s Indonesia, an NGO that aims to improve quality life of people with dementia and family caregivers and works toward greater Dementia Alzheimer awareness, care and risk reduction in Indonesia. DY holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Curtin University Perth, Australia, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Ohio State University, USA and a Diploma in English Literature from the University of Indonesia. DY has more than 20 years of experience in public health, public private partnerships and communication, in the past, DY has worked as a Health Communication Consultant with the World Bank, WHO and UNICEF. Since 2016, DY has taken the lead in supporting 20 ADI members in the Asia Pacific in capacity building through Dementia Care Skills Training of Trainers program supported by Dementia Australia, ADA Singapore and Alzheimer’s Indonesia involving 15 countries in the region resulting to approximately 25 lead trainers empowered and 5000 family caregivers and health care workers trained. DY’s mother was diagnosed with Dementia in 2009 and has been her source of inspiration in improving quality life of people with dementia, caregivers and inter-generations through the establishment of Alzheimer’s Indonesia since 2013. Her mother passed away in April 2017 but her legacy continues.

Huali Wang, MD, PhD (China)
Dr. Wang is Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry, executive director of Dementia Care and Research Center at Peking University Institute of Mental Health. She is the Executive Vice President of Alzheimer’s Disease Chinese (ADC). She set up the first dementia caregiver support group in China in 2000, developed and tested a community-based family caregiver support program in Beijing. Dr. Wang developed the concept of dementia continuum care and implements the concept in community-based dementia care. Dr. Wang leads the National Platform on Clinical Dataset and Biobank of Major Mental Disorders. She has joined the panel of the WHO priority setting exercise on dementia research, participated in the advisory board of WHO West Pacific Regional Office to develop the toolkit for community-based dementia care in low and middle-income countries, and has been designated by the National Health Commission as the WHO Global Dementia Observatory Focal Point for China. In addition, Prof. Wang is one of the technical advisers for dementia care and service in National Health Committee. She drafted the National Geriatric Mental Health Plan which was one the key elements of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Health Aging.

LiYu Tang
LiYu Tang is the Secretary General of Taiwan's Alzheimer's Disease Association as well as a Board Member with Taiwan Family Caregiver Association and World Dementia Council. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing from Taipei Medical University College of Nursing and a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from National Taiwan University School of Nursing. She has organized World Alzheimer’s Day/Month campaigns every year since 2006.

M Sinta Kristanti, PhD
Martina Sinta Kristanti (Sinta) is a nursing lecturer at Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She was graduated from UGM (2005), master degree from Monash University (2008) and a doctoral degree from Radboud University, the Netherlands (2020). Her job covers area of teaching, research and publication as well as community development. She has been trained as a qualitative researcher and her research interest is on palliative care especially for family caregivers of patients with cancer and dementia. Some projects that she has initiated are: Basic care training (intervention program for caregivers of patients at home), CAPTAIN (CAregiver of PalliaTive care patients in INdonesia) and SPARK (Strengthening PAlliative caRe in the community through nurses’ Knowledge enhancement). Her interest is also on culture and art, in 2017-2019 she was appointed as a Museum Ambassador of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Shinya Ishii, MSc, MD, PhD
Shinya Ishii is a graduate of University of Tokyo. After trained in anesthesia in Teikyo University, he entered internal medicine residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Afterwards, he completed a fellowship at University of California Los Angeles in Geriatric Medicine. He worked at University of Tokyo as a physician/researcher for eight years, then moved to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan where he served as Dementia Specialist for two years. Currently he is a specially appointed professor at Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University. His research interest focuses on quality of dementia care.
