Description



Currently, there is no cure for dementia. This webinar features eminent speakers who will discuss in-dept the benefits and dangers of early screening and early diagnosis. Is early screening warranted even before symptoms become evident?

Join the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA), the Global Ageing Network (GAN), and INTERDEM, on 29 September 2021: Screening Early for Dementia: What are the Risks and Benefits? International speakers will share their expertise followed by a live Questions & Answer session.

As with all programs in the IPA Webinar Series, this presentation is intended as an educational event on topics that are timely and relevant to the field of mental health for older adults.

  • Huali Wang, MD, PhD (China)

    Dr. Wang is Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry, executive director of Dementia Care and Research Center at Peking University Institute of Mental Health. She is the Executive Vice President of Alzheimer’s Disease Chinese (ADC). She set up the first dementia caregiver support group in China in 2000, developed and tested a community-based family caregiver support program in Beijing. Dr. Wang developed the concept of dementia continuum care and implements the concept in community-based dementia care. Dr. Wang leads the National Platform on Clinical Dataset and Biobank of Major Mental Disorders. She has joined the panel of the WHO priority setting exercise on dementia research, participated in the advisory board of WHO West Pacific Regional Office to develop the toolkit for community-based dementia care in low and middle-income countries, and has been designated by the National Health Commission as the WHO Global Dementia Observatory Focal Point for China. In addition, Prof. Wang is one of the technical advisers for dementia care and service in National Health Committee. She drafted the National Geriatric Mental Health Plan which was one the key elements of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Health Aging.

  • Frans Verhey, MD, PhD (The Netherlands)

    Frans Verhey is a professor of Old Age Psychiatry and the director of the Alzheimer Center Limburg at Maastricht University Medical Center.

  • Ishan C. Williams, PhD, FGSA (United States)

    Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, School of Nursing and the Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at the School of Nursing. Her background and PhD are in human development and family studies. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Institute on Aging at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focused on recruitment and health care inequities among older adults and family caregivers. Her current research focuses on quality of life among older adults with dementia and their family caregivers, chronic disease management for older adults with Type 2 diabetes, and culturally appropriate community-based interventions among African American/Black adults. Her research further concentrates on understanding the health care needs of older adults and their family caregivers within social, cultural, and geographical contexts. Her research has been published in various peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Journal of Applied Gerontology, Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health). She has been an active member in the Gerontological Society of America and is a Fellow of GSA. She currently serves as the President of the Southern Gerontological Society as well.

  • Dr. William E. Reichman (Canada)

    Dr. William E. Reichman is President and Chief Executive Officer of Baycrest, one of the world’s premier centers focused on seniors’ health and residential care, aging brain research, innovation and education. Dr. Reichman is currently President of the International Psychogeriatric Association and has advised the World Health Organization and the governments of Canada, the United States and China on health policy. He is Co-Chair of Canada’s Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia.
