Description

‘R&D’ and ‘innovation’ are often used interchangeably, but function differently across different organizations and often sit in different places within an organization. This project has worked to better understand where innovation sits in an organization and how individuals can progress to the top of this function. To do this, this project has conducted a survey of 45 R&D organizations on their innovation and R&D functions, interviews with thought leaders working with R&D and innovation professionals, and case studies of the path that individuals have taken to get to the top of innovation in their organization. The team will share key recommendations for individuals wishing to progress within innovation and R&D.

  • Steven T. Perri, External Innovation Technology Manager, Eastman Chemical Company

    He is responsible for execution and coordination of external research agreements, confidentiality agreements, and intellectual property generated through collaborations with universities and other external research organizations. He also manages the portfolio of projects carried out through these research engagements to ensure projects are aligned with the business and technology strategy. He previously was the Eastman Innovation Center site manager located on Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. His role involved managing the Eastman staff in the Innovation Center, project portfolio metrics, connecting Eastman subject matter experts to university talent, and facilitated interactions between project managers of Eastman funded projects and faculty at the North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has been at Eastman for 26 years working in various capacities as a research chemist, project manager, group leader, and external technical program manager. His technical background and research experience spans organic chemistry, catalysis, mechanistic studies, and synthetic methodologies.

  • Steven Moskowitz, Senior Principal, Innovation Management, Entegris

    Steven is an innovation thought leader at Entegris, currently leading a project to improve how the organization manages the entire innovation space – from idea management to new product development to technology and product roadmaps to portfolio management. He is also driving the effort to integrate these processes with change management and continuous improvement processes for mature products and technologies.

    Steven holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of Rochester and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Washington. Upon completing his graduate studies, he went to work at IBM’s Microelectronics Division where he remained for over 12 years. At IBM he held a variety of roles across the technical and managerial spectrum. Steven also is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt with extensive experience at leading technical, business process, and organizational development projects.
