Mass incarceration. Racial disparities in jails and prisons. Bail reform. Police brutality. These issues are not new, but these civil rights issues have been amplified by recent events. In Illinois, just a few short years after the murder conviction of former Chicago police officer, Jason Van Dyke, changes are coming to the criminal justice system. Through the election of progressive prosecutors, bail reform, decriminalization of marijuana, and other political and legislative innovations, Illinois is embarking on another evolution within the criminal justice system. These reforms, coupled with innovative alternatives, including restorative justice practices and a greater focus on mental health and racial justice, may lead Illinois to make systemic changes in how public safety is ensured in our communities. Don’t miss this introduction to the coming state and county level reforms. Our accomplished panel of attorneys discuss recently enacted reforms, and offers insights into how these reforms will increase public safety and restore social justice and human rights to our communities. Attorneys with all levels of experience who attend this online program will better understand:
- The components of qualified immunity reforms, bail reforms, and use of force reforms passed in the 101 st General Assembly;
- How trauma awareness, racial equality and restorative justice are addressed through current criminal justice reform proposals;
- How the flaws in our criminal justice system and the impact of mental health have not gone unnoticed by Illinois courts; and
- Much more.
