Speakers:
In the present environment, opportunities exist to rapidly disseminate data. Preprint usage has exploded amidst the COVID-19 pandemic with researchers wanting to make their findings available without the delay of peer review and publication processes. However, regulatory decisions and clinical practice guidance should not rely on preprints, under what circumstances is the use of preprints warranted?
Conversely, several peer-reviewed articles of COVID-19 studies were retracted from journals including NEJM and LANCET giving pause to the gold-standard of the editorial and peer-review process. Are there approaches that can be implemented to improve traditional peer-review or address limitations to rapid reviews? Even as articles are retracted, their message and digital footprint can linger on and have a lasting impact on the public.
Organizations such as SciLine, Sinai Immunology Review Project, and Rapid Reviews: Covid-19 strive to provide rapid-review services to evaluate the quality of the preprints of broad public interest. This session will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with preprints, peer reviewed articles, and their impact on public interests.
