With easy access to a plethora of scientific content online and elsewhere, the general public are engaging with information from research and clinical trials more than ever before. However, most of these resources are not intended for non-specialist audiences and this is often compounded by a language barrier in the Asia-Pacific region. In order to address these issues, plain language summaries (PLS) of medical literature are becoming an increasingly relevant and important channel of scientific communication. PLS enable the scientific community to share information and findings from research and clinical trials in a simple and easily understandable form and aimed at non-specialist audiences including patients and caregivers.

This webinar will outline the current demand for, practical applications of, and the challenges associated with developing PLS in the Asia-Pacific region. It will provide an overview of the roles and involvement of patient advocates and industry in the process of developing PLS and highlight potential compliance considerations. Furthermore, the webinar will provide guidance on applying global standards and using the "Plain Language Summaries of Publications" toolkit.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
  • Describe how patient advocates in the Asia Pacific region are becoming more interested in accessing and understanding published research
  • Propose how to use a global, evidence-based, and co-created ‘Plain Language Summaries of Publications’ toolkit in the Asia Pacific region
  • Explain the use of PLS within pharma or biotech organisations
  • Understand the challenges and complexities in executing PLS at an affiliate level
