Patient stories and perspective can be used to communicate a variety of topics, including the fundamental imperatives of improving clinical care, patient safety and communications. Their unique input can also lead to an increase in patient involvement in personal treatment decisions. Many authors are now recognizing that first-hand patient experiences bring a different perspective to that of the health care professional and can be impactful. The hope is to involve and encourage more patients to share their viewpoints because their perspective can be unique and vital in disseminating real-world experience through collaborative publications. Patient and patient advocacy groups are now aiming to put a “face” to a diagnosis and clinical experience to ensure that healthcare professionals conduct an intimate, detailed look at the effect of disease on patients’ lives. Medical publication professionals are hoping that including patient voices in collaborative publications will lead to improved patient outcomes
