One small step for a congress, one giant leap for scientific presentations

With great change comes great opportunity. Through the story of how one key European Congress used the used the pandemic as the impetus to improve the quality and delivery of their scientific presentations, this provocative session will illustrate how transformative results can come from stepping away from routine approaches and being willing to embrace a more engaging way of sharing scientific information. This session will be led by Jude D’Souza, an expert communicator and champion of using slides not as a crutch but as they were intended – as visual aids to support compelling narratives. This session will educate on effective presentation principles and will explore the Congress’s motivation for their daring approach, how speakers reacted to the constraints, and how the experience has changed their mindset about presentations for the future.

Learning objectives:
  • Understand the importance of building a presentation focusing on the core story, without the distraction of slides
  • Be able to appraise when slides are actually needed, ensuring they work with their presentation rather than against it
  • Implement learnings from Congress organizers around how constraints can encourage creativity and innovation
  • Implement learnings from presenters on how the training and restrictions shifted their approach to developing and delivering presentations
