ISMPP U - Patients in Focus: Redefining Scientific Conference Dynamics

Thank you

During the last decade, we have witnessed a paradigm shift in medicine development with the increased engagement of patients as key stakeholders. Understandably, patient partners are keen to attend scientific conferences for similar reasons to healthcare professionals, including education and networking. Furthermore, patients are increasingly engaging with, and leading research, and are therefore keen to present their work for peer review and discussion.

The rapid move to online conferences during the COVID-19 pandemic increased inclusivity and accelerated the presence of patients at many of these important meetings. As many conferences revert back to in-person, or hybrid at best, patients are increasingly frustrated by barriers to their attendance. In addition to the risk of infection from in-person events, registration and travel costs, technical language and regulatory restrictions are some of the barriers faced by patient partners when attending scientific conferences.

During this webinar, we will hear from an experienced faculty, including a patient advocate, industry professional, and a healthcare professional about the opportunities and challenges for patients in attending scientific conferences. We will debate opportunities for conference secretariats and scientific communications professionals to facilitate the inclusion of patients in scientific conferences.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session attendees will:

  • Understand the value of involving patients in scientific conferences to ensure that insights from all key stakeholders in medicine development are included.
  • Be aware of the opportunities and challenges faced by patient partners wishing to participate in scientific conferences.
  • Be able to identify and support opportunities to include patient partners in all aspects of scientific conferences including as attendees, presenters, and organizers.
