The City of Columbus Smart Columbus Program Management Office (PMO) and Institute of Transportation Engineers will host a free webinar to share the latest systems engineering document for the Smart Columbus Program. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2020, from 1:30 to 3:00 pm ET.
Background on Webinar:
Through the USDOT's Smart City Challenge, in 2016, the Department selected Columbus, Ohio, to define what it means to be a "smart city" and serve as a model for other cities wishing to fully integrate innovative technologies--such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and applications--into the transportation network. The goal of the Smart Columbus program is to connect people by creating opportunity for city residents to better access jobs and services while improving the overall safety and efficiency of the city's transportation network. The Smart Columbus program is comprised of nine individual projects covering three themes--enabling technologies, emerging technologies, and enhanced human services.
The Connected Vehicle Environment (CVE) is one of the eight Smart Columbus projects, and integrates smart traveler applications, automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and smart sensors into its transportation network by focusing on building infrastructure and applications. The project has installed roadside units and other connected vehicle-compatible equipment at signalized intersections in the project area and onboard units on participating private, emergency, transit, and freight vehicles. The CVE will enhance safety and mobility for vehicle operators (both private and public) and improve pedestrian safety in school zones by deploying connected vehicle infrastructure on the roadside and in vehicles. The CVE will also provide sources of high-quality data for traffic management and safety purposes. The connected vehicle infrastructure deployment will occur along seven major corridors in Columbus. The deployment of in-vehicle devices targets populations that are located near or frequently use the infrastructure deployment corridors.
This webinar will focus on the path to go-live. It will provide an overview of the test plan, and a summary of the results and lessons learned from the testing process. It will also provide information around the private participant recruitment process, tools, schedule and lessons learned. It will also discuss the installation approach, and how the team planned, tracked and completed installations for multiple stakeholder groups, at locations across the City. Finally, with installations nearly complete, the presentation will also touch on the status and lessons learned from the installation of OBUs on the various vehicle configurations.
